While looking for a job on a number of job portals you might have come across many advertisements which reads some thing like this ‘Looking for writers willing to work in shifts’? If yes then this is a new trend in outsourcing which we would call as journalism outsourcing.
Western countries unions refer it to as remote control journalism where journalism jobs are shifted to low cost countries. What is making the newspapers shift these jobs to countries such as Singapore and India is that they are facing drop in revenue from advertising and circulation.
Though we would see a rise in outsourcing in this area but it seems that very few editorial functions would be outsourced. It seems that after IT, journalism would emerge as the next area which would witness an increased outsourcing trend. I believe that it would be only possible to outsource English newspapers as these countries have a good command over English and other language newspapers would have to still wait.
