We are very much aware about the racist abuses being faced by Indian call center agents but most of it goes unreported under the guise of natural outcome of outsourcing but now the number of cases of racial abuse is on the rise and it’s becoming hard to ignore this fact.
Mike McPhate reported in the Morning Call about an instance of racial abuse faced by an Indian call center agent:
Debalina Das, 22, a computer help-line agent in the city of Hyderabad was greeted by a caller from United States with a torrent of racial and sexual slurs, accused her of “roaming about naked without food and clothes” and asked, “What do you know about computers?” The diatribe ended with the comment: “This company is just saving money by outsourcing to Third World countries like yours.
The problem is that these racial attacks are on the rise and it is having an adverse affect on the psyche of employees working for these companies. They have developed a negative impression about America due to these tirades. Their wounds get rubbed with salt when their manager advises them to forget the incidents and regard it as a job hazard.
I believe that companies should make an effort to cure this problem before it reaches a point where it cannot it taken care of and they should try and educate their American customers that economic hardships forced them to outsource their operations and the people who had been handed over the job were in no way involved in snatching jobs from them. If they understand the reasons behind outsourcing probably this racial hatred would subside.
